How to test a Typescript function using jest?

Time:05-01

I am trying to write the tests for the typescript function using Jest and there are some complex case I am trying to test but I am not sure how. Example scenario, what would happen when a function that accepts a string as argument receive a number instead.(incompatible types in general)

A function and tests

const removeDot=(value: string): string=>{ return value.toString().replace(/\./g, "-")}
//This works
expect(removeDot("..")).toBe("--")
// Testing this throw compile error
expect(removeDot(1)).toBe("--")

I would like to know if there is best way I can do it.

CodePudding user response:

jestjs is used to test runtime code logic, NOT the static type of the compile time.

For the source code of the tests written by TypeScript, you need to make sure the arguments of the function are the right types.

The type of value argument is string, TSC will not allow you to pass a number to the function at compiler time. If you want the function to handle the number argument, the type should be modified to string | number. And, your runtime code logic should also be updated.

Arguments to removeDot are already limited by TSC to string type. This type check applies to both running code and test code, unless the developer deliberately asserts the arguments as any to bypass the TSC type check.
