How to use a CSV file and use the CSV file to have an input from a user?

I have dataset about car accidents statistics by using a .csv file. I want the user to type in State and all of the information about that State gets displayed for the user to see. How can do that?

I'm thinking of something like this:

crashes = 0
stateInput = input("Please enter a State: ")

print("The total of number of crashes in" , stateInput , "is:" , crashes)

You could create a function in Python that filters the results of your CSV by the state entered in the input.

Example:

def StateFilter():
    print("Please enter a state: ")
    stateInput = Input()
    upperstate=stateInput.upper()
    for row in csv:
       count =0
       if upperstate == State.upper():
          count  = FatalCrashes
       else:
          count  =0
    resultstatement = "The total number of crashes in "   str(stateInput)   " is: "   str(count)

   print(resultstatement)
    

You should then be able to call the function and have it run though the program. I am not sure if you have edited the column names or what your csv is named, so you will have to edit that in the code. This should run in Jupyter Notebooks or if you are running in terminal/command line

I am by no means a perfect programmer as I am still relatively new, but the basic concept should work. If someone with more experience would care to edit, then great!

I suggest you use the standard-library's csv module to read the file. Specifically the csv.DictReader class which will convert each row of the CSV file into a Python dictionary which will make processing it easier.

The following code shows how to do that and also stores all the state dictionaries into a higher level stateDB dictionary so that the name of each state is associated with information about it, effectively making it a "database". Note that the state names are converted to all uppercase to simplify look-ups.
