My method is more troublesome
 # remove old graphics drivers
Sudo apt purge nvidia - *
# the following installation depend on
Sudo DPKG -- add - architecture i386
Sudo add apt - repository ppa: graphics - drivers/ppa
Sudo apt update
Sudo apt install build - essential libc6: i386 libglvnd - dev PKG - config
# runlevel 3 closed dislay manager
Sudo telinit 3
# enter the small black screen
Sudo apt install nvidia - 440 # or other nvidia version provided by TAB completion
# restart
Reboot

Try this first
