If you do not require a USB, you can use a computer on the RS232, is the sort of 9 pin interface, pick up the old display that kind of,
Write a small software control DTR or RTS pin height, it has a GND pin, it should be suitable for you,
If computer RS232 interface, can clean out treasure a USB to RS232, 15 or so,
